Weekly reset

How to reset your week when the plan has fallen apart

When the plan falls apart, the answer is rarely to move every unfinished task into tomorrow. A useful reset starts from what is true now.

Stop carrying the original plan forward

The week you planned may no longer exist. Rebuilding from the original version creates debt. Start from the time, commitments and energy you actually have left.

Use three recovery decisions

For every open item, choose deliberately rather than defaulting to “overdue”.

  • Keep — it still matters enough to protect
  • Move — it matters, but not now
  • Release — it no longer deserves space this week

Choose one stabilising next move

After the reset, make the next action small and obvious. The aim is to restore trust in the plan, not compensate for the entire disrupted week in one evening.

Use the disruption as planning evidence

Notice what caused the plan to fail: unrealistic estimates, too many priorities, weak buffers, low-energy timing or a genuine unexpected event. Use that information when you build the next week.
